Hello, Writers! :-)
Thank you for your interest in Power of the Pen! If you have not done so, please read the "FAQ" above to get all of the details about HMS's Power of the Pen team. That's a great place to get all of the basic info you need. If you still have questions after checking out that information, please don't hesitate to contact me at the email address above.
First things first - tournament dates!
Before you even consider trying out, you need to commit fully to the following dates. You will be needed ALL DAY LONG, so don't plan on doing anything else on those days! Check right now to see if there if there is even the slightest possibility that you may have a Science Olympiad tournament or a You Be the Chemist event or a music recital or anything else. Seriously, if you cannot attend EVEN ONE of these three dates, then you cannot be on the Power of the Pen team this year. If something pops up on your schedule that was not anticipated, I am still going to expect you to choose the tournaments below over everything else because you are committing to them if you attend the tryouts. I'll hold you to that promise.
Tryout dates
This year our tryout dates will be on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, November 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. These tryouts will be held in my room, B226. Writer's need to attend all three tryout days if they want to have a chance to make the team. Having three pieces of writing to score gives me a very good overview of each writer's talent. Again, our tryout dates and times are:

Before Wednesday the 2nd, make sure you visit
THIS Google Sheet
to sign up for tryouts!
(When you click on that link, you won't have access to it yet. Just hit "request access" and then I'll give you permission. :-)

Tryout format
Tryouts will look the same each day. Students will come to my room, B226, with a couple of pens. They will be given a prompt and they will have 40 minutes to complete that piece of writing. This year, finally, we will be 100% in person again, so it's back to writing on real paper with real pens! :-)
Team announcement
I will be announcing who made the team the week of November 7th, but it's hard to say exactly which day that announcement will be made. It all depends on how many people try out and how much scoring I have to do. That announcement will appear on this page, too, so keep your eye out for it after we complete the tryouts. There will be six 7th-grade and six 8th-grade writers chosen for the team.
